E-Bike Maintenance Checklist: Weekly, Monthly and Yearly

An e-bike does not need much looking after, but a few minutes of care every week keeps it safe, quiet and efficient, and saves you money on repairs. Use this simple checklist to stay on top of things.

Before every ride (1 minute)

  • Brakes: squeeze both levers. They should feel firm and stop the bike well before the lever touches the handlebar.
  • Tyres: give them a squeeze and look for cuts or anything stuck in the tread.
  • Battery: check it is charged and locked securely in place.
  • Lights: make sure front and rear lights work if you will be riding in low light.

Every week or two

  • Tyre pressure: pump your tyres to the pressure printed on the tyre sidewall. Correct pressure improves range, grip and comfort, and helps prevent punctures.
  • Chain: wipe it with a clean cloth and add a little bike chain lube if it looks dry. Wipe off any excess.
  • Quick clean: wipe off mud and grit, especially after wet rides.

Every month

  • Bolts: check that the handlebars, stem, seat post, pedals and racks are tight and nothing rattles.
  • Brake pads: look for wear. E-bikes are heavier than normal bikes, so pads can wear faster, particularly in wet weather.
  • Wheels: spin each wheel and watch for wobbles. Check the spokes are not loose.
  • Cables and wires: look for fraying, kinks or loose connectors.
  • Battery contacts: keep them clean and dry.

Every year

Book a full service with a bike mechanic at least once a year, or more often if you ride every day. A service usually includes adjusting gears and brakes, checking wheel trueness and spoke tension, inspecting the drivetrain for wear and checking the frame and fittings. It is also a good time to make sure your motor and display software are up to date where that applies.

How to clean your e-bike properly

  1. Switch the bike off and remove the battery if you can.
  2. Rinse gently with a low-pressure hose or bucket and sponge. Never use a pressure washer, as it can force water into the motor, bearings and electrics.
  3. Use a bike-specific cleaner and a soft brush, avoiding the brake discs.
  4. Dry the bike with a cloth, then re-lube the chain.
  5. Refit the battery once everything is dry.

Signs your bike needs attention

  • Squealing or grinding brakes, or a lever that pulls close to the bar
  • Gears that jump, slip or will not change cleanly
  • A clicking or creaking noise when you pedal
  • A sudden drop in range or the motor cutting out
  • Any error code on the display

If you spot any of these, stop riding and get it checked. For anything electrical, contact our team first. We are your first point of contact for warranty questions.

Look after the battery too
