Which Type of Electric Bike Is Right for You?

Folding, step-through, cargo, fat tyre, mountain or hybrid? With so many types of electric bike to choose from, it helps to start with the journeys you actually make. Here is a simple guide to each type and who it suits best.

City and hybrid e-bikes

Best for: commuting, errands and leisure rides on roads and cycle paths.

Hybrids are the all-rounders. They are comfortable, efficient and usually come with practical extras such as mudguards, lights and a rear rack. If you want one bike that does a bit of everything, start here.

Folding e-bikes

Best for: small homes, car boots, offices and train commutes.

Folding e-bikes fold down in seconds so you can store them under a desk or in a cupboard. They are also the only type of e-bike allowed on the Tube, London Overground, Elizabeth line and DLR, as non-folding e-bikes have been banned from those services since March 2025. Smaller wheels make them nippy in town.

Step-through e-bikes

Best for: easy getting on and off, shorter riders and everyday clothes.

A low frame means you step through rather than swinging your leg over the saddle. That makes stopping and starting in traffic easier, and it is ideal if you have stiff hips or knees, or ride in a skirt or work clothes.

Cargo e-bikes

Best for: the school run, the weekly shop and carrying work kit.

Cargo e-bikes are built to carry heavy loads, children and passengers safely. Longtail designs carry seats and bags behind the rider, while front-loading box bikes put the cargo in front where you can see it. Look for a strong motor, powerful brakes and a high maximum load. For many families, a cargo e-bike can replace a second car.

Fat tyre e-bikes

Best for: gravel, sand, mud, snow and pothole-filled roads.

Extra-wide tyres give loads of grip and cushion, so fat tyre bikes feel stable and confident on almost any surface. They are heavier than other types, so bear that in mind if you need to lift your bike.

Electric mountain bikes

Best for: trails, forest tracks and off-road adventures.

E-mountain bikes have suspension, grippy tyres and strong brakes. A hardtail, with suspension at the front only, is great value and suits lighter trails. Full suspension soaks up rougher ground for more comfort and control.

Electric trikes

Best for: riders who want extra stability and carrying space.

Three wheels mean you do not need to balance at low speeds, which gives many riders the confidence to get back on a bike. Most trikes also have a large basket for shopping.

Still not sure? Ask yourself these questions

  • How far is your usual journey? Longer rides call for a bigger battery and a comfortable riding position.
  • Where will you store it? Short on space? Go folding.
  • Do you need to carry children or heavy shopping? Choose cargo.
  • Do you ride on rough ground? Look at fat tyre or mountain.
  • Is getting on and off a challenge? Step-through or a trike will help.
